The Doors were formed in Los Angeles in 1965 by UCLA film students Jim Morrison and Ray Manzarek, joined by guitarist Robby Krieger and drummer John Densmore. They signed to Elektra Records in 1966 and released this self-titled debut in January 1967, featuring the No. 1 hit Light My Fire. The album spent more than two years on the Billboard charts and established the Doors as one of the most electrifying acts in rock music. Over five years, Morrison and the Doors recorded six studio albums that became cornerstones of rock history. After Morrison's death in Paris on July 3, 1971, the surviving trio recorded two more albums before disbanding in 1973.
