Offered here is a stunning piece of 1960s folk-rock history: an original 1966 French pressing of the Simon & Garfunkel four-track EP "The Sounds of Silence" (CBS EP 5655, 7 vinyl, 45 RPM), bearing the authenticated signatures of both Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel. The iconic picture sleeve features both artists in their classic mid-1960s look, with the bold French market designation N° 1 AUX U.
A testament to the duo's transatlantic chart dominance at the height of the folk-rock explosion. Paul Simon's signature appears diagonally lower left on the record sleeve, executed in black ink.
Art Garfunkel's autograph is signed diagonally upper right, in blue ink. Both signatures have been individually forensically examined and authenticated by GFA. Paul Frederic Simon and Arthur Ira Garfunkel first met in elementary school in Queens, New York, in 1953, when both were cast in a sixth-grade production of. By 1957, as teenagers performing under the name "Tom & Jerry, " they had their first charting single.
After reuniting under their real names in 1964, they signed with Columbia Records and quickly became one of the most celebrated musical partnerships of the twentieth century. Paul Simon has additionally been inducted as a solo artist and has earned 16 Grammy Awards in total, while Art Garfunkel's crystalline tenor voice became one of the most recognizable in popular music history. This is the French CBS EP pressing (catalog number EP 5655) of "The Sounds of Silence, " released in France in 1966.
The four-track EP format was standard for the European market and contains an exceptional selection of Simon & Garfunkel material from their breakthrough period. The title track was written by Paul Simon and originally recorded acoustically in March 1964 at Columbia Studios in New York City for the duo's debut album. After the album initially underperformed commercially, producer Tom Wilson - without the duo's knowledge - overdubbed electric guitars, bass, and drums onto the acoustic track. This remixed version was released as a single in September 1965 and rocketed to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the week ending January 1, 1966, prompting Simon to return from England and the duo to hastily record their second album. The song was later featured prominently in Mike Nichols's landmark 1967 film. Cementing its place in American cultural history. Album was added to the Library of Congress's National Recording Registry for being culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.3 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1966; "Homeward Bound" peaked at No. 5; and "Richard Cory, " Simon's adaptation of the Edwin Arlington Robinson poem, remains a fan favorite and staple of the duo's catalog. Both signatures have been forensically examined and authenticated by Guaranteed Forensic Authenticators (GFA), whose team brings over 100 years of combined law enforcement and forensic document examination experience.
Each signature was individually compared against known exemplar autographs and confirmed genuine. The examination was conducted on 9/11/2023. The GFA forensic analysis determined that Art Garfunkel's signature was signed with blue felt-tip or fiber-tip pen, positioned diagonally at the upper right of the sleeve. Paul Simon's signature was signed with black felt-tip or fiber-tip pen, positioned diagonally at the lower left. Both signatures display normal characteristics consistent with the known exemplars across all measured parameters including style, line quality, slant, spacing, base alignment, stroke formation, and character formation.
